Celebrating Penny Zuber

After 17 years, Penny Zuber will be retiring from her position as the Missions Coordinator at Jersey at the end of 2025.

Penny’s heart for missions began in 1997, when she and her husband, Greg, joined a team traveling to Kenya. Though initially hesitant to embark on such a remote trip, God used that experience to ignite in her a passion for seeing the Gospel shared with people around the world.

In 2005, Pastor John Hays invited Penny to assist in coordinating mission trips more formally, and in July 2008, she officially joined the Jersey staff as Missions Coordinator—a role she has served in faithfully ever since.

On that remote trip to Africa, I watched Penny face challenges she’d never imagined and grow into the missionary she is today. She matured from someone concerned about the risks to a missionary fully committed to the Great Commission - no matter the risk!

MORE FROM PASTOR JOHN

It is my joy to share a few thoughts concerning the incredible ministry of one of the finest if not the finest missionary God has raised up in Jersey Church!

I cannot remember the exact context but I believe it was during a time when Penny was part of a team from Jersey serving missionaries in SE Asia that she gave a testimony about her calling to serve God through missions, “I knew God had called Greg (her now  deceased husband who had a passion for spreading the Gospel globally) but now I was feeling the urge to go out to a lost world but I wanted to be certain of this calling me personally and that I was not just standing too close to Greg when God called him!”

I invited Greg, Penny and Kyle (their then teenage son) to join me on a mission trip to the heart of Africa. This would be the Zuber's first real mission trip to a remote, wild part of the world. This was not a trip for the faint of heart, accommodations were crude, the travel arduous, and the food was to say the least different. All of us had to receive a host of preventive injections before disembarking from the US and were taking daily malaria pills, therefore health risk were constantly on your mind. When we arrive at our remote location in the bush of Africa the entire team was disappointed by the “hotel” we were staying in for the next week, it consisted of approximately eight freestanding casita/hut like structures, don't think Caribbean luxury.  It was maybe a, “one star” rating. My children were also on this trip and it was determined it would be best for the three teens on the trip to stay in their own hut. At some point when Penny was moving Kyle into his accommodations she noted an insect in the room. After our evening meal and saying good night to our kids I returned to my hut to get ready for the next day of non stop evangelism I was tigerered up, but exhausted from the travel. Penny remained in the room and broke out her secret weapon to protect our children from the threat of mosquitoes or other slithering predators. A roll of duct tape she had carried from home. She proceeded to make sure the all three of the kids were safely in their beds, covered by their mosquito nets and then she duct taped them in. Also because there were gaps in the door to the hut she sealed it as well! I couldn’t believe what I saw when I checked on the kids early the next morning. As you might guess the duct tape ran out in the next few days and we all learned together the need to trust in God and not our supplies. Penny and the rest of the team were staggered by the hundreds of beautiful African people who professed faith in Christ through our small groups evangelism. And out fears were displaced by the incredible power of the Gospel. On that trip a true missionary was born! Penny would mature from a missionary concerned about the risks to a missionary committed to the Great Commission no matter the risk!

Since then, Penny has organized trips of every kind, including disaster relief efforts, multiple World Changers trips (which saw large groups of our Jersey Students travel domestically to work on large mission projects in urban areas), exploratory and informational trips to build international partnerships, and short-term international trips to the very ends of the earth.

Since 1997, 1,017 people from Jersey have gone out on international mission trips.

As our Missions Coordinator, Penny has coordinated over 65 short-term international trips. Including short-term domestic trips, that total number would climb over 100. She herself has personally gone out on dozens of journeys during that time. God has used Penny in incredible ways to inspire, equip, and send out volunteers, some of whom have become long-term missionaries around the world.

After two decades of faithful service, Penny leaves behind a legacy marked by compassion, vision, and unwavering dedication to the Great Commission. Her leadership has mobilized hearts, equipped hands, and extended the reach of the Gospel to communities both near and far. Penny’s impact will continue to ripple through the lives she touched and the ministries she helped shape. We are so thankful we were part of that “ripple effect” in Southeast Asia! We celebrate her remarkable journey and pray blessings over the new season ahead. “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” — Romans 10:15

Penny has also led 10 Feed the City events, providing food items, warm clothing, and care to between 900 and 1,100 families and individuals each year. This is an event beloved by our church family, as it provides such a wonderful opportunity to serve alongside each other. She has faithfully supported numerous ministries and events within our church, including Care Week, Care Day, and Vacation Bible School. She has also worked alongside specific international partners, as well as church planters here in North America, as a line of support between them and the congregation at Jersey Church.

How can words even begin to describe the impact and influence of Penny Zuber on my life and ministry?! From the beginning days of planting a church in Marysville, to the global church planting efforts from Tampa, and now back to lead the SCBO here in Columbus, Penny and the Jersey family have always been there! Congratulations Penny on your retirement, although I am confident you will not be slowing down at all :)
Much love from The Westbrook and SCBO Family

Penny Zuber adds immeasurably to the ministry of the Strategic Church Network and Stowe Mission of Central Ohio every day. Penny helped lead the team who raised the money for the 888 Parsons Avenue building. Her passion for helping people facing hardships, her love for the Lord and missions, and her attention to detail provided the necessary skills to provide a safe place where hundreds of people now find gospel hope and restoration regularly. Additionally, she represents Jersey Church (and all SBC churches north of Kentucky) in the annual Mission Ministers Metro, a guiding coalition of Mission Ministers in our largest SBC churches across the United States. Penny is a treasure to the kingdom and an incredible encouragement to me, personally.

Executive Director, Strategic Church Network

Her impact on our church, our surrounding communities, throughout the nation, and across the globe is an eternal one. We are so grateful for her example and can’t wait to see how God uses her next!

THANK YOU, PENNY, FOR TAKING JERSEY AROUND THE WORLD!
